Hamburg’s up-and-coming carpet fair format
Necessity is the mother of invention, as they say. A year or so ago, world-leading trade fair Domotex had to be cancelled a second time due to the pandemic, and was again missed as a key venue for the trading of handmade rugs. This posed major challenges, in particular for those suppliers whose customers prefer selecting premium-quality individual pieces in person. Thus the idea for Carpet Week Hamburg: a multi-in-house fair conceived and launched on short notice in May 2022.
Twenty-six of Hamburg’s carpet merchants opened their warehouse and showroom doors to industry visitors and buyers in a pilot run for the new format. The attendance underscored how Hamburg is still one of the largest trading centres for handmade carpets, making a visit well worthwhile for any purchaser.
It came as a pleasant surprise how well Carpet Week Hamburg went over, thus the participat- ing traders immediately set to work on ways to optimise the concept for another show. This in- cluded focusing on better communication: of Hamburg’s identity as a carpet industry hub and with the buying public generally. A special edi- tion of Carpet Home appeared as part of these ef-
