What current interior design trend do you particularly like?
I am pleased to see the renewed appeal of interior design and that many people are looking more to inte- riors as a way to bring balance and harmony to our entire life and planet. Going beyond aesthetic consid- erations, it is about taking a more sensory andholistic view while integrating technology into the mix. This way we can create homes using more sustainable materials that are good for our health and our planet.
If you could change one aspect of the current carpet industry, what would it be?
More transparency – consumers need to feel confident and have trust in the rug they are purchasing.
We need to trust its quality, materials, durability, and that those who made it were fairly compensated and not exposed to dangerous chemicals – or practices in general – during the manufacturing process. We also, as consumers, need to ask more questions and stop trying to find the lowest price possible – we have to recognize that our demanding low prices creates problems that ultimately lead to more and more mass production. And that brings with it the use of harmful chemicals and materials, copycat design and questionable labour practices, to list but a few negative impacts.
Do you have a favourite carpet?
I was just thinking about this recently – I love so many! I have rugs at home from Anno and Sara Helsinki – and a few vintage Berber carpets. I also love the rugs from Mariantonia Urru, Edelgrund, Tisca and Natur Pur – I tend to be drawn towards very natural colors and materials.
